Gilman Paper Company Collection
Edward Steichen Princess Yusupov, 1924 Gelatin silver print, 9 3/4 x 7 7/8 inches Gilman Collection, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Howard Gilman was a paper magnate who began collecting photography in the late 1970s, when the market for photographs was beginning to take shape. With the guidance of curator Pierre Apraxine, Mr. Gilman acquired many of the premier examples of 19th Century French, British and American photography, as well as icons from the turn-of-the-century and early modernism.

Authorship
The Copyright Act of 1976 states that All works created on or after January 1, 1978, are protected by statutory copyright from the time of creation in fixed tangible form, regardless of registration or publication with copyright notice.

Good Intentions
In 1997, Herbert Axelrod, publisher, gifted four (4) Stradivarius instruments to the Smithsonian's National Museum. The reported value of the donation on Mr. Axelrod's tax return for that year was $55 million.
